Katie and I are finally made it to Shanghai. Here we met up with Dr. Zhang (one of Katie's professors from NY College of TCM). He and his wife were wonderful hosts and took us in for a few nights. He also set us up with a few of his colleagues to give us a tour of the Shanghai University Hospital and Museum. Upon arriving, we met a translator and Dr. Xin. We first saw both in and outpatient facilities for herbal medicine and acupuncture. (Western Med is not a separate department, instead it is an integrated therapy provided in each department.)
After our tour, we had an awesome lunch in a private room in the doctor's cafeteria. Later, we took a tour of the three-story TCM museum across the street from the University. It was incredible to see how advanced this TCM hospital was in comparison to Chengdu University of TCM Hospital. More importantly, visiting these two hospitals has enhanced my confidence in the power of TCM. It is amazing to see multi-million dollar hospital systems that specialize in what is considered to be "alternative medicine" in the United States. If these large institutions can provide (even adequate) medical attention to millions of people each year, how alternative is it really?
