Yay… Katie’s here! Katie is my friend from NY. She started with me at PCOM SD back in January 2005. After a few semesters, she transferred to PCOM NY. Then about half- way through the program, she transferred again to The NY College of TCM. Katie also just graduated this April and I persuaded her to come on the trip. Luckily, Tantan was nice enough to allow her to join us.
Katie had to finish exams at her school so she wasn't able to arrive until the second week of the program in Chengdu. Her flight got in on Monday night,at 11:00 pm and I took a taxi to the airport to meet her. My ride from the hotel to the airport was 50 yuan. On our way back, a different driver tried to charge us 120 yuan. Of course it was difficult to argue with him since he didn't speak English. I called Tantan down from his room. He came outside and screamed at the driver for about 10 minutes in Chinese. What a sight to see! Tantan realized that the driver didn't have his meter running or license showing so he called the cab company the following day to complain. The company ended up suspending the driver for two weeks without pay and sincerely apologized.

By the time we got into the hotel it was about 2:30 AM. Very few of us couldn't sleep because our body clocks were still on PST. We checked into our rooms and then a few of us headed over to the "Wo Wo" (something like a 7-Eleven). After lunch, Sandy, Heidi and I did a little shopping around town. There are tons of little shops here selling everything from hardware to liquor. Although the city does not seem to be very affluent, I am surprised to see a few high-end clothing stores and specialty shops selling skin-care products and glasses. Also there about every other business is a restaurant. Seems like people eat out a lot... regardless of what time of day it is. It is extremely inexpensive to eat here. Most meals cost about 10 -15 Yuan, which is about $2.00... crazy huh? |
